A 14-year-old girl has been charged with murdering a man, police have announced.
The victim, who has been named as 24-year-old Nimroy Hendricks, died in Russell Way, in Crawley, West Sussex, after being found with stab wounds to the chest.
The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is expected to appear before magistrates in Crawley on Friday afternoon. She has also been charged with possessing a knife in a public place.
Emergency services were called to Russell Way in the Three Bridges area of Crawley at 9pm on Tuesday evening where they found Mr Hendricks with serious injuries, Sussex Police said.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene near the Skyfall block of apartments and attempted to save the man but he he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said a 14-year-old girl from Crawley was arrested in south London at around 10.20pm on Wednesday on suspicion of murder.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “The circumstances of this case are particularly challenging for everyone involved and will continue to be difficult as people come to terms with significant loss and grief.
“It is imperative that the Criminal Justice system is allowed to operate effectively in order to support all involved in this case and therefore, I would make a personal plea to people to not speculate on social media on the circumstances of the case or the identity or motivation of the defendant, whose name may not legally be published.”
A 21-year-old man from London was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, police said yesterday.
Social media reports suggested that helicopters were circling overhead above Downland Drive and Brighton Road during the time of the incident.
A Sussex Police statement said on Wednesday: “A man died from his injuries after being stabbed in Three Bridges, Crawley.
“Emergency services were called to Russell Way at 9pm on Tuesday (October 27), where they found the 24-year-old victim seriously injured.
“He was treated by paramedics and an air ambulance doctor, but despite the specialist care provided was sadly declared dead at the scene.”
Police on Wednesday indicated the incident was “believed to be confined to the two people involved.”
A social media user told of a stabbing on Twitter last night, writing: “Reports of a stabbing in three bridges, Crawley by the Paymaster roundabout.”
